There is a common myth that cats and dogs instinctively recognize and stay away from dangerous plants. While some dogs are currently being trained to sniff out specific types of invasive plants that can harm the environment, most cats and dogs have no ability to distinguish between plants that are safe for them, and plants that are not.

Many plants are toxic to our furry friends. Chances are, you or a neighbor has some dangerous greenery growing somewhere within reach of your pet. Because of this, it’s generally a good idea to discourage them from chewing or ingesting any plants or vegetation.

Keep an eye on them when you’re outside together and if possible, place plants out of their reach in your home. Be sure to pick up any fallen leaves or petals around your plants regularly.

Before bringing a plant into your home, you can check the ASPCA’s toxic plant list HERE to see if it’s safe for your fur baby.

If you think your pet might have eaten a plant they shouldn’t have, watch for signs of toxicity. These symptoms can vary depending on what your pet has eaten. If you see any of the following signs, please call us immediately at 864-372-2438!

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Lack of coordination
  • Shaking
  • Trouble breathing
  • Seizures

Some reactions can take longer to occur, and different pets can have different reactions. A lack of appetite, drinking more than usual or sluggishness can also suggest something isn’t well with your pet. If you suspect your pet may have potentially ingested something poisonous, please call us. It’s better to err on the side of caution when it comes to their health.
