Biopsies and Tumor Removal
Sometimes, a veterinarian needs a closer look at a group of cells in your dog or cat. An aspirate or biopsy allows them to remove a small amount of cells so they can get an accurate picture of what is happening in your pet.
Pet Biopsies and Tumor Removal
A biopsy is a surgical procedure used in cats and dogs to obtain a tissue sample for diagnosis of a variety of pathologies, from cancer to skin disease. When changes to the skin, hair, or nails occur, a skin biopsy may be performed to remove a skin lesion such as a tumor, collect a tissue sample for deep tissue culture, or make an accurate diagnosis.
Your dog or cat will be placed under anesthesia to obtain a biopsy. Your veterinarian will perform the biopsy and then submit the tissue sample obtained from the biopsy to a veterinary pathologist for interpretation. Your pet’s biopsy site is usually very small and typically requires 1-2 sutures.
