Heartworm and Flea/Tick Prevention
While heartworm, fleas, and ticks can pose serious health risks to your pet, River Oak Vet can assist you in preventing problems and illnesses brought on by these parasites.
Heartworm and Flea/Tick Prevention
Most prescription products for flea, tick, and heartworm prevention are given monthly, but a few last 3 months to a year. We strongly recommend giving preventatives year-round: the heartworm parasite is transmitted by the mosquito, which can resurge unpredictably. There’s no way to tell if a mosquito is infected or not, which is why prevention is so important. Heartworm disease has been reported in all 50 states; it only takes one bite for your dog or cat to become infected.
Flea and tick infestations are two of the more common issues facing pets and pet owners. Left untreated, fleas can multiply rapidly and make your dog seriously ill. Fleas spread common diseases such as flea allergy dermatitis, tapeworms, anemia, and Bartonellosis. Flea and tick prevention is an essential part of your cat or dog’s care routine.
All cats and dogs, regardless of indoor/outdoor status, should be on a year-round flea, tick, and heartworm prevention protocol to ensure your cat or dog stays healthy and pest-free no matter what adventures they may find. Our team of dedicated professionals will help you determine which is the most appropriate preventative for your pet.
